The Multimedia Thesaurus (MMT) &

Interactive Multimedia Playroom (IMP)
These projects grew out of my desire to develop a more
refined descriptive vocabulary for music, and a perceived need for more
adequate terminology for discussing sound in multimedia contexts, especially
among potential collaborators who may not have an intimate knowledge of music
jargon. The initial project was first presented in conceptual form at the ESCOM
conference in 2003; the first prototype of the IMP was inaugurated at the Concordia
Hexagram facilities in October 2005.
The projects have received initial funding from Hexagram and CIAM.
Details of the MMT project as it was first conceived
can be found HERE: See WRITINGS for links to various
reports since 2003 (ESCOM, EMS-05, Barcelona ICMC 2005, ISMIR 2006, CAA 2007). The
list of team members - consultants and players as of October 2005 - can be
found HERE.
The symposium in October 2005 gathered together team
members, guests, and interested viewers in a forum where a variety of
structures stimulated discourse about sound, its interaction with image and
movement, and ways to facilitate further discourse. We discussed terminologies, classifications, perceptions,
strategies, cultural and historical perspectives, and other aspects that can
help us establish useful frameworks for analysis and criticism of sound in art
contexts.
The current installation is at Oboro Gallery in Montreal, April 14-May 12, 2007.
