the Interactive Multimedia Playroom (IMP) is a space in which groups of people can explore the relationships between - and their responses to - a variety of differing multimedia elements. The Playroom is constructed as a three dimensional grid in which users can establish sets of criteria for the categorization and evaluation of sounds and images (both moving and still), and thereby develop a common vocabulary for discussion and analysis of these materials. As such, the Playroom facilitates the investigation of sound and its latent and potential correlations with space, light, colour, and movement. The project’s basic goal is to heighten awareness of the role of sound in art-oriented research contexts. We are currently developing 3 physical installations: one in Montreal, Canada; one in Aveiro, Portugal, and one mobile. A virtual version is also under development.
